ori Short, R.N., B.S.N., is the Clinical
Research Coordinator for Southern
Delaware Research Consulting, Inc.
– a corporation that she established
in 2010. As a research coordinator,
she oversees grants, budgets, federal regula-
tions, regulatory submissions, protocols, data
collection forms, data input into a variety of
databases, recruiting plans, staff supervision
and education, and a multitude of other duties.
She began her full-time clinical research
career in 2006 by working with a cardiovas-
cular surgical group in Salisbury, Md. In 2008,
Short began her entrepreneurial journey as
she pursued other business opportunities. “I
began to see that this could really grow into
something exciting. It’s important to understand
how clinical research can change the scope of
practice from laboratory to bedside practices.
I get to experience that every day.” Her
journey includes clinical research in cardiology,
cardiovascular surgery
and orthopedics.
Short began her
nursing education at
Delaware Technical &
Community College
in Georgetown and
graduated in 1996 as
a Licensed Practical
Nurse. She returned
to Del-Tech and graduated in 2000 as a
Registered Nurse. The Georgetown campus
provided exceptional staff to guide and direct
her career choice. Her nursing practice career
has included: medical-surgical, emergency
room, trauma coordinator, sexual assault
nurse examiner, same day surgery, recovery
room, chemotherapy infusion, clinical research
assistant, clinical informatics specialist,
radiology special procedures and instructor for
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
At Wilmington University, Short completed
a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) in
2006 while continuing to work full time and
maintaining her family responsibilities. She
met influential professional colleagues and
mentors during her educational experience
at the University.
As part of her professional practice, Short
continues as a guest speaker for B.S.N.
students. Students comment that she is an
inspirational role model who demonstrates
unique and essential career pathways as she
advances the nursing profession via clinical
research.
Short plans to return to school to com-
plete a master’s degree in clinical research
“to increase the depth of my research
knowledge and skills for future endeavors.”
In all, Short exhibits admirable qualities of a
proactive and assertive nursing professional
entrepreneur. WU

RNTOBSNPROGRAM
In February, ProgramChair Angie Steele-
Tilton and Online Coordinator LisaDrews
facilitated an Adjunct Faculty meeting
throughBlackboard Collaborate. This virtual ses-
sion was designed for all faculty teaching in the
undergraduate nursing programs. It provided
an overview of course expectations for faculty
when teaching, highlighted the course syllabi
and COSA, provided information about our
“course teammentors” and allowed forQ&A.
The session was archived and is available in
our College Faculty Blackboard site for future
reference. In addition to the two facilitators,
13 faculty attendedand provided positive
feedback. We hope to establish a schedule of
Collaborate sessions each month for connecting
with faculty in both undergraduate and graduate
programs.
DNP PROGRAM
The College of Health Professions has
recruited Paul Silverman, Dr.PH., as Adjunct
Faculty for the DNP Program. Dr. Silverman is
currently the Associate Deputy Director for
Nursing alumna devoted to clinical research
