The new DFIR Club in the College of Technology had its first meetup in the Pra Student Center in April.
T
he WilmU DFIR Meetup is a new
club focused on Digital Forensics
and Incident Response. Its first
meeting was Saturday, April 20,
at the Student Center. At least
40 people a ended.
The club is open to students, alumni,
instructors and anyone else with an interest
in Digital Forensics. It is the idea of Chris
Shanahan, who serves as the club’s faculty
advisor and moderator. Shanahan served
as a New Castle County police detective
for a number of years and built the police
department’s digital forensics lab. As a young
detective in the emerging field of digital
forensics, Shanahan was o en faced with
unfamiliar equipment from which he had to
obtain digital forensics evidence. O en there
was nowhere to turn, and he had to figure it
out on his own. He would have welcomed a
sounding board where he could bounce off
ideas. That’s the motivation for the new club.
Of the a endees at the Meetup, most were
WilmU students. Three additional instructors
were on hand, including Bob Montejo, Sco
Shaw and Mark Hufe. Also among the a end-
ees were a handful of students from Delaware
State University and Delaware Technical and
Community College. Their primary motivation
for a ending was the Wireshark Workshop,
which would help folks interested in taking the
Cyber Quest Challenge.
The Cyber Quest Challenge, h p://uscc.
cyberquests.org, is required to qualify for the
Delaware U.S. Cyber Challenge to be hosted
by our very own New Castle campus between
July 8 and July 12. It’s a grand collaboration
between Wilmington University, University of
Delaware, Del Tech and the State of Delaware’s
Department of Technology and Information
(DTI). See h p://dti.delaware.gov/information/
cybersecurity_challenge_boot_camp.shtml for
more information.
Another motivation for the DFIR Meetup
was the formation of a number of DC3
teams to compete in the Department of
Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3) Digital
Forensics Challenge. That’s a competition that
Wilmington University has twice won. See
more on that.
With respect to DFIR, Shanahan will serve as
the moderator offering various presentations,
but members of the group will be expected
to step up and provide presentations as well.
Here are some of the topics the club will
address:

Technology cyber security club. Other clubs

by Faculty Advisor Fred Stinchcombe; the
Dover Cyber Club; and the Cyber Wildcats,
which focuses on Capture the Flag-type
competitions.
