W
ilmington University’s
College of Education
has teamed with the
Brandywine School
District to provide a
select group of teachers with a different way
to teach mathematics in schools.
Singapore Math is a new mathematical
model that gives teachers and learners
deeper insight into the “why” of mathematical
thinking rather than just the “how” of math-
ematical doing. A new course was designed
(MED 6000, Elementary Mathematics
for Teachers) and is being offered during
Fall Block II at the Wilson Graduate
Center, tuition-free, to 10 Brandywine
teachers.
The course is being team-taught by Hestor
Sutton and Sarah Todorow, both experienced
math educators who have been active in
implementing Singapore Math in the schools.
Following MED 6000, participants will be
able to take a second and more advanced
course, also tuition-free, funded by the
Brandywine School District.
This initiative is part of a continuing col-
laboration between the College of Education
and the Delaware Foundation for Science/
Math Education.
“The collaboration is designed to improve the
teaching and learning of, and attitudes toward,
mathematics in the schools as well as in our own
college classrooms and courses,” said Dr. John
Gray, Dean of the College of Education.
