BEST PLACES TO LIVE
IN THE HUDSON VALLEY
Six towns and villages that will make you feel at home.
Cold Spring’s Main Street offers a variety of shops, including plenty for antiques lovers.
        NYACK
Only 30 miles from New York City, Nyack has a progressive small-town feel during the day and a thriving nightlife after dark. Our collective imagination of what Northeast, small-city Americana looks like was in large part crafted by Nyack itself through the paintings of iconic American Realist painter Edward Hopper. He was born and raised here, and developed much of the sensibilities that came through in images that would go on to influence our culture in the present day. You can visit his former Nyack home and museum, The Edward Hopper House Art Center, and see paintings including one of Hook Mountain, an enduring part of Nyack’s outdoor landscape.

COLD SPRING
Over the years, many a New York City weekender has pondered the thought of moving to Cold Spring. It is one of the most enduring day-trip destinations in the Valley, in large part thanks to the hiking it offers at Breakneck Ridge, right off the Metro-North stop, and a vibrant down- town (not to mention some phenomenal wings at Whistling Willies). At the very end of Main Street is one the most scenic and relaxing places in the Valley: Cold Spring’s waterfront, which is centered around a small plaza with benches and a gazebo, a boat dock on one side, and an expansive green space on the other. In warm months long lines spill out the doors of Moo Moo’s Creamery, where patrons can get their cone and stroll by the river. In the sum- mer, waterfront movie nights draw large

ends unwinding with hikes on Hook Mountain or the equally serene Ny- ack Beach State Park. As the sun sets, the crowd descends on Main Street,
crowds of parents and children, sprawled out on lawn blankets.
For families considering a move to town, the schools are strong, with Haldane Cen- tral School District coming in at 107 out of 675 in the state on Niche’s 2019 Best School Districts list. Cold Spring — being one of the more scenic, safe and estab- lished towns in the Valley — has a very thin real-estate market with a hefty price tag, with some properties costing well over $1 million. That being said, the well-restored Colonial and Victorian homes in the town’s center couldn’t be more appealing, giving the town a 19th century village feel.

The schools are nothing to sneeze at, either: the district is 79 on Niche’s 2019 Best School Districts list and is the 265th most diverse district (out of 11,851 districts) in the United States!
Your slice of this life would come in at the higher end of our list’s price range. The median home price here is $426,000, a price that will put you near the center of village life with a three-bed- room, two-bathroom home built in the mid-20th century.
