  ROCKLAND COUNTY
Though small in size, Rockland County is big on things to do. Remarkably, while the area is only about 30 miles from New York City, it’s approximately one-third parkland and is federally designated as a Preserve America Community. Bear Mountain, Harriman, Nyack Beach, High Tor, and Rockland Lake are state parks all within its boundaries. Luckily for shoppers, the Palisades Center and the Shops at Nanuet also call Rockland home. Other highlights include its waterfront and sidewalk dining, golf courses and country clubs, mom-and-pop shops, and historic site — including the oldest pub in America. Foodies here are especially blessed, with a plethora of restaurants in Nyack, New City, Nanuet, and Piermont.

Industries that thrive here include health, retail, manufacturing, phar- maceutical, and research business- es, including Columbia University’s Lamont–Doherty Earth Observatory and groups like the Rockland Business Wom- en’s Network and Rockland Business Asso- ciation actively support the lively business scene here. The recently opened Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club in the village of Sloatsburg, contributes to the wealth and growing development of the county.
In historic Haverstraw, visit the Haver- straw Brick Museum to learn how the town helped to build Manhattan with its 42 brickyards. Today, commuters can ferry across the Hudson to Ossining’s Metro-North station, and on to Man-
hattan, but you may not want to leave before enjoying Haverstraw’s emerging food scene along the waterfront, with restaurants such as CATCH on the Hud- son and the Hudson Water Club.
Rockland County is also home to great schools, with several districts (Suf- fern Central, Nyack, Clarkstown, South Orangetown, and Nanuet) ranking in the top 100 in the state on Niche’s list. Clarkstown, set amid a bucolic landsape featuring Rockland Lake and High Tor State Parks, is also listed as one of the best places to live in the United States by Money magazine.
Did you know?
Haverstraw brick was used to rebuild New York City after a massive 1835 fire in lower Manhattan.
