                  DUTCHESS COUNTY
In the heart of the valley, Dutchess County has been in the news for initiatives that include a planned sake brewery at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and a mixed-use retail/residen- tial “redevelopment” on the former IBM campus in East Fishkill. Metro-North and Amtrak make it an easy ride to destinations like Beacon, Pawling, Poughkeepsie, and Rhinebeck. And while these towns and cities get all of the hype for attracting young families from NYC, Dutchess is also a good place to be a senior with spanking-new community centers and recreation programs, as well as free classes at Bard, Marist, Vassar, and Dutchess Community College.
For a thrilling Halloween experience, at- tempt Kevin McCurdy’s Haunted Mansion in Wappingers Falls, known as one of the most interactive scream parks around. In Rhinebeck, the annual Sinterklaas Send- off Celebration and Festival will usher in the holidays with puppetry, music, a pa- rade, and Candlelight Tours at Clermont State Historic Site in Germantown that will have you cherishing the beauty of the holiday season.

The Hyde Park-based CIA has cul- tivated graduates who have gone on to enhance the rich dining culture of the county with res- taurants like West Main Kitchen & Bar in Wappingers Falls and Essie’s Restau- rant in Poughkeepsie. Beyond excellent cuisine, Dutchess also serves up some of valley’s finest suds from breweries such as Hudson Valley Brewery and Plan Bee Farm Brewery.
From window-shopping in picturesque Rhinebeck, to viewing world-class art- work at Dia:Beacon, to admiring the view from the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, there are activities for ev- ery taste in the central Valley region. Visit the historic mansions in Hyde Park and then head up to Bard College’s Richard B. Fischer Center for the Performing Arts in Annandale-on Hudson see a live show.
Outdoor recreation in Dutchess Coun- ty includes everything from biking, hik- ing, horseback riding, golf, kayaking and more. The Dutchess County Fairgrounds is home to one of the best county fairs in the state, as well as many other events including the Hudson Valley Hot Air Bal- loon Festival. To get the complete Hudson Valley experience, visit the many family- owned farms for pick-your-own produce, farm stands, and seasonal festivals such as the Apple Festival at Barton Orchards in Poughquag.
