HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION UNDER $5 MILLION
GEORGE & LYNCH, INC.
Atlantic Avenue, Phase I Improvement Plan
Atlantic Avenue in downtown Bethany Beach has often experienced flooding conditions during rain events, as the water just didn’t have anywhere to go. The recommendation was replacement of the existing pavement with Porous Asphalt Paving, an innovative move as Porous Paving is typically used in parking lots and walking trails. The porous pavement, along with the stone subgrade, now allows the water to flow straight down, easing the flooding possibility. Several challenges were faced, including a snow storm which occurred during construction; the need to protect underground utilities; and a shortage of the type of stone required for the subbase. George & Lynch, Inc. had no recordable injuries in over 4900 manhours
on the project.
