T
he Engine Development II Course
focuses on the issues involved
in programming for 3D engines.
Course topics include program-
ming object and camera motions,
collision detection and collision response,
integration, performance analysis and special
effects such as particle systems.
GMD 300 is a fun, team-based course
where students get exposed to working as a
team for a client. The client could be internal to
theUniversity, or an external entity.
The course has three projects to work on that
vary from semester to semester, and usually
push the boundaries of what the students
expect a “gaming” course to be. Team roles
get swapped and challenged; for example, one
section had a single programmer who was really
strong in his skill set, so for one class he had
to supervise the other students who were not
strong in programming while wearing oven mi s
in order to complete a section of the project. It
forced him to communicate to the other team
members more effectively than “Slide over, let
me do it.”
The course places students into roles they
wouldn’t normally choose in order to bring out
some trouble spots that they may face in real
life – dealing with teammembers not doing their
job, communication skills, doing work asked of
you that you›ve never done before, and more.
Each time the students have (usually) risen to
the challenge and succeeded with a broader
appreciation of the various roles.

Professor bio
Both Dan Castagna and Sco Shaw have taught
the course and have sometimes taught it together.
Both try and bring in outside clients in order to
get the students “answerable” to someone other
than themselves. Dan has a degree in Computer
Science fromDrexel, and is super passionate about
all things game. Sco is also very passionate about
sharing knowledge and challenging his students, and
he has a rather boring bio on Linkedin.
