Dozens of guests gathered on
the green on an unseasonably
chilly spring day at Deerfield
in Newark, Del., for the Alumni
Relations Department’s Annual Scholarship
Golf Classic to raise money for Wilmington
University’s most worthy customers – its
students.
Every dollar collected at this event went
directly to the University’s student scholarship
fund, which helps students realize their dreams
for a degree in higher education. The event
included a lunch, refreshments, a silent auction
and entertainment from the band Thoughts in
Common. Four previous scholarship recipients
appeared at the event to tell their stories of
how the University’s support has helped them.
“Wilmington University has had a huge impact
on my life,” said scholarship recipient Taurean
Taylor, who graduated this spring with a B.S.
degree in Elementary Education. “It was not
easy for me growing up, but this scholarship
gave me a chance to pursue my dream.”
Taylor joined classmates Anah Galloway,
Jessica Hamm and Michelle Yang to thank the
players and sponsors for their support of the
scholarships.
A full field of 132 players took to the course at
the event, a number that includes approximately
30 University volunteers fromCareer Services,
Alumni Relations and Student Life. The event
sponsor was Heritage Financial Services, which
donated $5,000 to the fund. Also donating
$5,000 was Atlantic Mechanical as the event’s
presenting sponsor.
During the tournament, the WilmU Golf
Team was stationed at Holes 2 and 4 to
offer their skills. Guests at the event had the
opportunity to donate $20 to let a golf team
member tee off in their place.
More than $2,700 was collected on
the day, with players buying raffle tickets,
mulligans and more.

Affairs and Alumni Relations Dr. Tina
Barksdale addressed the guests at the
evening reception to remind supporters that
these scholarship funds are truly changing
people’s lives.
