  Delaware Statewide Truck Parking Study
Recently Completed
Another cooperative effort between DelDOT, WILMAPCO, and the Dover/Kent MPO, the Delaware Statewide Truck Parking Study was completed to address overnight parking hotspots as well as more and staging needs within the State of Delaware. Truck parking is essential yet drivers face a shortage of adequate parking nationwide.
Truck parking is necessary to provide a location for truck drivers to safely take federally required breaks, wait for shipper or receiver appointments (known as staging), and use amenities such as restrooms and refueling stations. An additional focus of the study included regular engagement with the local trucking and recommendations. Currently, Delaware has 12 truck parking locations that offer a total of 337 truck parking spaces. The usage of during different parts of a typical day. The graph below illustrates how the state’s truck parking facilities

is highest during the early morning hours, from 2 to 3 a.m.
supply at a statewide level, shortages near freight generating facilities, and surrounding urban areas in Delaware. As a result, drivers park in undesignated locations at the corridors and shoulders, and on roads. The study goes into great detail on the characteristics of the usage of undesignated locations as well.
So what solutions are appropriate to Delaware? While there is no silver bullet for truck parking, there are a range of solutions available to improve the situation. Solutions include state policies and programs,
Policies and Programs: Focus on institutional changes that promote the inclusion of truck parking into governance and investment decisions. While policies and programs may not
directly target a specific location, they are part of an overarching strategy that can set the foundation for DelDOT and local partners to advance truck parking on a making.
Projects: The study contains that target specific truck parking classified into groups:
• Capacity expansion projects, which are investments that increase the number of truck parking spaces at a given location.
• Information and technology projects, which are investments to increase access to information and technology, in order to use effectively.
