CARGO HANDLING
NewMobileCranehasAbility to
LIFTMORE, REACH FARTHER
T
hePort of Baltimore recently added anew feature to theDundalkMarine
Terminal, as a
GroveGMK7550
all-terrainmobile hydraulic crane began its
tenure in January.
TheGrove crane has the ability tohandle heavy loads and reach farther than
Dundalk’s othermobile crane, “BigRed,” aManitowocM250T. The new crane
was purchased “to enhance the Port of Baltimore’s overall onsite heavy-lifting
capabilities and, whennecessary, give ‘BigRed’ amuchneeded respite,” said
Steve Thomas
,MarylandPort Administration (MPA), GeneralManager, Cranes.
TheGrove crane extends farther “in a fraction of the time and effort it would
take tomove and set up a standard ‘stick’ crane such as ‘BigRed,’” according
to Thomas. It can alsobemoved faster aroundDundalk andpossibly other Port
terminals. “It has the ability to ‘self erect’ without the assistance of another crane
and reachhighway speeds of up to53MPH,” said Thomas.
TheGrove crane has apractical capacity of 400,000pounds and, when fully
extended, has a reach of almost 200 feet. Since its first use, the crane’s heaviest
lift has been280,000pounds.
