What could be more inspiring than gorgeous lake views and pristine mountain vistas? If your trip to the Deep Creek area moves you to take home some locally made art (or even make some art yourself), there are lots of options to choose from.
For one-of-a-kind, handmade keepsakes,
the Garrett County Arts Council’s Gallery Shop (garrettarts.org) in Oakland is a great first stop. It’s open Wednesdays through Saturdays. On Mondays and Tuesdays, private artist appointments offer a personal touch for your shopping experience. The shop is at the heart of one of Garrett County’s two state-designated Arts & Entertainment Districts. (For a complete list of artists working in or near the Oakland A&E District, turn to oaklandaedistrict.com/partners.)
The county’s other A&E District is in Grantsville (grantsvilleaedistrict.com). At its heart sits the Spruce Forest Artisan Village (spruceforest.org), a cluster of log cabins that serve as galleries, shops and workspaces. The annual Christmas in the Village is among the area’s most popular events. Another must-stop for local crafts is Penn Alps Restaurant & Craft Shop (pennalps.com), whose store features the work of hundreds of local artisans.
Beautifully made glass art from Simon Pearce Factory Outlet & Glassblowing
(simonpearce.com/our-stores/mountain- lake-park-outlet) is a souvenir that’s sure to leave an impression with friends and family. If you’d like to make your own art (as well as some great vacation memories), try a class
at Deep Creek Pottery (deepcreekpottery. com). For quilters, Four Seasons Stitchery (4seasonsstitchery.com) in Grantsville has quilting fabrics in every imaginable color and print.
Of course, there’s more to our county’s arts and entertainment scene than visual arts and crafts. Our Town Theatre (ourtowntheatre. org) in Oakland puts on regular plays designed to inspire the imagination of locals and visitors alike. Recent performances
have included The 39 Steps and The God of Carnage.
The Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF, artsandentertainment.org) puts on theater, dance and musical performances at the new Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Garrett College. The PAC’s schedule will also highlight local groups such as the Garrett Community Concert Band and the Garrett Choral Society. Check performingartsgc. com for upcoming dates!
Each September, GLAF partners with HART For Animals to sponsor the Deep Creek Lake Art & Wine Festival (deepcreekwinefest. com). The one-day event features beautifully handcrafted works by local and regional
