  PERFORMING ARTS CENTER:
A Home for Education, Entertainment and Events
The Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Garrett College opened to great fanfare in 2022. For its first event performance, the 26,270-square-foot, 485-seat facility hosted a production of Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost by The Endangered Species Theatre Project based in Frederick, MD.
The feedback from both attendees and performers was that “the venue is gorgeous and spectacular,” said Mary Cummings, executive director of both the PAC and the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF). GLAF is the largest presenter of performing arts and arts education in the county and serves the entire tri-state region of Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
In 2023 and beyond, the PAC will host GLAF-associated performances, as well as theater productions put on by area students. “We’re also very excited to host performances by the Garrett County Choral Society,” said Cummings. “Our mission is to be a place where the community comes together for performing arts and arts education.”

The PAC is also available to rent for events, such as weddings. Interested parties can reach out via the venue’s website (performingartsgc.com). In addition to the main theater, the PAC has a spacious lobby, a sub-dividable multipurpose room and a catering kitchen that can provide food and beverage services.
Cummings points out that the PAC’s success would not have been possible without its partners — Garrett College, the Garrett County government, GLAF, Garrett County Public Schools and the Garrett County Arts Council. “This building has been over 40 years in the making,” Cummings said, “and we appreciate all the people that came together to make this dream a reality.”
DEEP CREEK FARMERS MARKET:
A New Destination for All Ages
The summer of 2022 marked the inaugural year of the Deep Creek Farmers Market — a concept that came from the minds of five local business owners.
“Four of us are female farmers in the county,” said one of the co- founders, Allison Boyd. (The fifth co-founder is an architect with an interest in local food.) “We all just kind of got together and started talking about how there’s no farmers market in Northern Garrett County. We found an opportunity there, to serve the area better and provide more local food options.”
The other farmers market in Garrett County is the Mountain Fresh Farmers Market in Oakland, which takes place Wednesdays and
