SYCAMORE
INTERNATIONAL:
Responsibly Recycling Tech
Sycamore International began as a side
project in Steve Figgatt’s dorm room.
Figgatt would fix up old laptops, then store
them under his bed until he could sell them
on eBay.
“After university, I saw an opportunity to
grow it into a side business,” he said. Figgatt
would buy old technology from school
systems and either refurbish it or recycle
it responsibly. Sycamore, first founded in
2010, soon gained more traction, moving
from Figgatt’s basement to a bigger space
and garnering external investment.
Today, Sycamore has approximately 70
employees and processes between 40,000
and 50,000 devices a month.
“A large portion of our business is still with
school systems, but we’ve also branched
out into healthcare,” Figgatt said. Financial
services and insurance are growth sectors
for Sycamore as well.
The company recently moved into a new
building in West Grove, which will allow it
to triple its capacity. “We’re well positioned
to be a regional partner for anyone
concerned about responsible recycling and
data security,” Figgatt said.
The new campus also represents a renewed
commitment to Sycamore’s Chester County
home and to the Chamber that supports
businesses here. “We looked at other sites,
but we decided to stay local because
there’s such a concentration of high-tech
companies here,” Figgatt said. “I’m also from
here, so I want to support the area.”
In addition to being a Chamber member,
Figgatt is a member of the Chester
County Economic Development Council’s
Board of Directors.
