In overseeing projects at Durkan Group, Exley enjoys helping local companies make
their brands more visible. “I like being able to take something they have and turn it into something aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound,” he said. “It’s nice to work with a variety of industries and learn more about them.”
So what have his experiences taught him about the qualities of a great leader? “You have to be true to yourself, but also have an ability to be diplomatic and understand how to get the best out of others you work with,” he said. “Say what you think is right, but also hear out everybody else’s opinion.”
Miller also emphasized the importance of considering others. “Great leaders understand that they are only as successful as their team,” she said. “Team investment is critical — recognition, training, opportunity, accessibility. It should be your top priority.”
In addition, she said, a leader should embrace a positive outlook: “Positivity is contagious, and when a leader is positive, that energy is kicked along to team members, creating better morale.” u
