“We picked those fields to give students a real mix of businesses, from the established to the entrepreneurial. All face challenges, but they’re different challenges. Students get different perspectives and a broader view of business,” said Duane Knecht, CCCBI board member and chairman of the Youth Leadership Program.
“Students also get exposure to some of the greatest companies in Chester County and their leaders,” said Knecht.
The Youth Leadership Program takes a hands-on approach. “It used to be more of a lecture by the company. Now, there’s a tour, a talk and a project the students can do,” said Martelli.
On STEM day, CTDI welcomed us into their facilities to offer the students an up-close and personal tour of their operations. YLP participants leave with a better understanding of the history of the organization. They meet with key personnel and get a real sense of the career opportunities right here in Chester County. The highlight of the day is a meeting with the president and CEO of the company.
On healthcare day, students heard from physicians, nurses, human resource and information technology staffers, and quality control and marketing departments in different settings, for a multi-facted approach to the field. Brandywine Hospital generously hosted us for a wonderful behind the scene look at healthcare, not only from the medical point of view but also from a business viewpoint.
At the end of each academic year, the CCCBI Foundation awards scholarships to program participants. The Sen. Robert J. Thompson Memorial Scholarships go to students who will matriculate at any accredited Pennsylvania school – college, university and trade school, public or private.
Martelli credits the program’s success to a dedicated group of volunteers, from the committee that plans the events to the companies that welcome them.
“In working with and supporting the young people of Chester County, the Chamber hopes to build on the talent native to the area,” said Martelli. “We are making sure that the next generation of business leaders has the skills to ensure the quality of life in Chester County.”
