This project started with rigorous construction constraints. The requirements to build on-grade with auger cast piles topped with 12’-24” slab on grade construction to support the scanning and tunneling electron microscopes. The structural system needed to be constructed to support a freestanding and contained CUP (Central Utility Plant). Lab space had to be both customizable utilizing a standard matrix. The project was designed to LEED Silver standards and built
to the strict requirements of the UD facility standards. The 226,000-square-foot project was constructed in 27 months. The use of a full-size complete mock-up lab allowed for technical analysis of lab configurations and the ability
to make quick adjustments thereby keeping the project within its aggressive schedule. The completed project is an asset to the UD campus and state of Delaware.
HEALTH CARE OVER $10 MILLION

Beebe Healthcare South Coastal Campus
This new 43,000-square-foot building for Beebe Healthcare houses a complex multi-purpose health care facility that includes specialty care, outpatient surgery, imaging suite, and a cancer center. Whiting-Turner successfully navigated HIPAA requirements and enhanced acoustic separation along with the construction of
a complex linear accelerator installation that included 1-to-6-foot thick concrete walls and roof, and a 2,000-pound, lead-lined door. The use of an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) contract allowed WT to coordinate closely with the design architect and key specialty trades to deliver a streamlined construction process that exceeded Beebe’s cost and schedule goals.
