New Castle Industrial Tract Trail Phase III
The New Castle Industrial Tract was a rail line connecting the Wilmington Riverfront and the City of New Castle, and is now a part of the New Castle County Greenway Plan. This phase completed
the continuous route between New Castle and
the Wilmington Riverfront for bike and pedestrian usage. The project was incredibly unique in the challenges that it presented: driving piles in a wetlands environment using barges, and throughout the marsh, creating a specialized access road with zero impact; setting two bridges over separate water bodies on barges; and most importantly, protecting the wetlands environment. The designer of the project wanted something not only functional but beautiful for generations of Wilmingtonians. The natural woods, exposed metal and natural patina is meant to tie in with the look of the DuPont Environmental Education Center and to magnify
the beauty that surrounds the Industrial Pathway.
