“My Catholic faith is the best gift my parents ever gave to me. My time as a Salesianum student pushed that faith to new heights, while also challenging me to put it into action. I want to be able to challenge the current students the same way that I was and also help to pass Salesian Spirituality on to the next generation.” —Dave Freeberry ’10
Sophomores — LISTEN. Members of the sophomore class must endeavor to listen to the voices of the marginalized in our midst. Service partnerships span across populations and underscore our patron saint, Francis de Sales’, teachings that “God is present everywhere, and every person is His work.” Students engage in a wide range of activities, from assisting single mothers and their infants to playing games and spending time with residents of the Mary Campbell Center or Kentmere Nursing Home. Regardless of where sophomore students serve, they are tasked with simply listening, without judgment, to the voices of their brothers and sisters in need.
Juniors — IMMERSION. To continue the journey and walk with those in need of justice involves students immersing themselves in a new community and environment.
Juniors participate in domestic and international BRIDGE trips and a partnership with DeSales Service Works in Camden, NJ and Wilmington, DE, where they experience days in the lives of those whom they are serving.
Seniors — SERVANT LEADERSHIP. Designed as a culminative experience, the CFJ program for seniors tasks them with channeling the knowledge and experiences from their previous three years and develop an intensive servant-leadership project. Students
must reach out to a local charity to identify unmet needs and develop an introductory proposal, project implementation and a post-project formal evaluation. The goal of servant leadership is to ensure students understand what it takes to listen, understand and work in solidarity toward addressing an issue.
