AN AMERICAN CHRISTMAS
TOURS & EXHIBITS
Holiday Train Show
New York Botanical Garden, Bronx
Nov 19–Jan 16
10 a.m.–6 p.m.
This adorable show has been chugging along for more than 30 years, featuring model trains that zip around nearly half a mile of track. Steam engines, streetcars, and freight and passenger trains go into tunnels, over bridges, and on overhead trestles. They also pass nearly 200 replicas of New York landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty and Yankee Stadium, crafted from cinnamon sticks, lotus leaves, and other plant materials. Metro-North trains that smell
like magnolias? Cardamom conductors? A commuter can dream. Tickets are $35 adults; $31 for students and seniors 65+; $20 for children 2–12, and free for children under 2. nybg.org/visit/admission/?keyword=tickets
An American Christmas
American Christmas, Mount Vernon
Through Dec 23
Weekdays 11 a.m.–7:30 p.m.; weekends 9:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m.
Perhaps you’ve never heard of the American Christmas company before, but
you’ve seen their handiwork: They make holiday decorations for iconic NYC buildings, such as Macy’s and Radio City Music Hall. This year, for the first time, they’re opening their warehouse and showroom to the public. Stroll through Santa’s Village, with 50 animatronics, beautiful photo backdrops, and more. After a peek at the warehouse where the magic happens, browse the on-site holiday shop. Visits with Santa are available some days, as is a vintage pop-up store. All proceeds from ticket sales benefit local nonprofits; 15-minute timed tickets are $10 weekdays, $15 weekends. tinyurl.com/santas-village
Beary Merry Holiday
Trailside Museums & Zoo, Bear Mountain
Dec 17
10:30 a.m.
Oh, you know you want to see bears tear stuff up — as long as that stuff isn’t your stuff. Well, here’s your chance: Staffers and interns will festoon the zoo’s bear den with gift-wrapped boxes (full of bear snacks and treats that visitors can help make!) and other festive decor. At 11:00 a.m., resident black bears Pal and Sadie will be ushered in to admire (in other words, smash) it all. This event won’t be cancelled for light snow, but the rain date (for actual rain) is Dec 18. Parking is $10 at Bear Mountain; the zoo is roughly a 10-minute walk. Admission is free, but a donation is suggested. trailsidemuseumsandzoo.org/events
