Station North A&E District
Just a few blocks north of Penn Station is colorful, directionally named Station
North, which has had a revitalization of
businesses
and arts venues
along Charles Street and North Avenue.
FUN FACT Station North was the first
area in Baltimore to receive the State designation as an Arts
& Entertainment District in 2002, and continues to serve as a model for arts districts throughout the country.
CHECK OUT
Open Walls. See the street art project that has brought artists from around the world to Baltimore to create public murals that stimulate community revitalization and national dialogue.
Charles Theatre. Catch the latest independent films at the historic Charles Theatre, which also offers a popular “Revival Series” of classic movies.
Live Music. Listen to some of Baltimore’s hottest acts at live-music venues like The Windup Space and Metro Gallery.
Parkway Theatre. Take a film class or watch seldom-seen independent films at the recently opened Parkway, which just completed a massive restoration project to become the home of the Maryland Film Festival and year-round programming.
Bromo A&E District
Located west of downtown and named after the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower,
the Bromo Arts District is a gathering place for
professional and independent
theaters, as well as
independent art galleries and
performance spaces.
HISTORY LESSON
The Read’s Drug Store at Lexington and Howard streets was
the site of one of the country’s first anti-segregation sit-ins. Morgan State University students and others conducted a peaceful demonstration in 1955 that led to the official desegregation of the store two days later.
CHECK OUT
Theaters. Take in a professional show at the Hippodrome Theatre, which hosts national Broadway tours, or Everyman Theatre, which features a resident acting company. Just a few blocks away downtown is also the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company.
Lexington Market. Taste local treats at the oldest continuously operating public market.
Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum/ Westminster Hall and Burying Ground. Pay homage to one of Baltimore’s most- famous former residents.
Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower. Climb to the top of the tower — modeled after the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy — and stop at artist studios before you get to the recently restored clock tower.

In addition to several artist studios and galleries, the Highlandtown Arts District — also known as ha! — is anchored by
The Creative Alliance. The arts center boasts a
year-round calendar of exhibitions, film
screenings, family- friendly workshops and world-music performances.
HISTORYLESSON The Highlandtown Arts
District is the largest and most culturally diverse
designated arts district, encompassing parts of Latino-majority Highlandtown, Patterson Park and portions of Canton and Greektown.
CHECK OUT
The Creative Alliance. Take advantage of diverse programming that often includes film screenings, world music, burlesque shows, classes and more.
Bus Stop Sculpture. Wait for a ride at one of the most entertaining, leisurely bus stops around (or just snap a pic for your Instagram).
Art Galleries. Visit any of the open art studios in this residential neighborhood.
Frank Zappa. Check out the bust of Baltimorean Frank Zappa outside the local branch library.
