Security Takes Center Stage at
Women’s History Celebration
T he 14th annual Women’s History breakfast, sponsored
in March by the Women’s History Association, was a
hot ticket among members of the Port of Baltimore
community — 150 people registered in the first 24 hours
following the event’s announcement.
For the theme “Women in Port Security,” the keynote
address was delivered at Sparrows Point Country Club by Vice
Adm. Sally Brice-O’Hara of the U.S. Coast Guard. Brice-O’Hara,
one of the first women in the active duty Coast Guard, talked
about winning the confidence of colleagues.

who represent various parts of the Port security network.
Marguerite Copper made a career switch from business
management and accounting to become part of the team at
Securitas Security Services, where she is a human resources
specialist. Susan Miller spoke about the importance of her role
as a female officer with the Maryland Transportation Authority
Police, noting that she and other women police officers working
on the terminals can be counted upon to bring a “softer touch”
to some potentially volatile situations. Cynthia Milligan, who
joined Pride International, Inc. out of high school more than 20
years ago and is now both the Export Manager and Security
Coordinator, advised young women at the event to become
involved in the networking opportunities offered within the
Port community. Kristina Tanasichuk rounded out the panel,
representing the organization Women in Homeland Security.
