Expert Advice Shared
During International
Trade Celebration
A
team of international business
experts, including several with
ties to the Port of Baltimore,
participated in a recent Maryland/D.C.
Celebration of International Trade to
share ideas about how to enter, expand
and excel in global markets.
The inaugural event, held May 21 at the
Maritime Institute Conference Center in
Linthicum, Md., featured content-rich panel
discussions about topics that ranged from
“Exporting U.S. Services” to “International
Trade Finance.”
“There were over 300 industry people
in attendance, which included exporters,
steamship line representatives, logistics
and trucking companies, as well as inter-
national banking and insurance interests,”
noted Mary Jane Norris, Manager, Port
Operations Services for the Maryland
Port Administration (MPA). The MPA was
among several sponsors of the celebration,
spearheaded by the Maryland/Washington
D.C. District Export Council, Inc. (DEC).
One of several 90-minute “expert
sessions” available to attendees was
“International Logistics,” led by Mark
Montgomery, President and CEO of Ports
America Chesapeake. Other sessions
included “Government Resources and
Services for Exporters,” with Bill Burwell of
the United States Export Assistance Center
and Signe Pringle from the Maryland
Department of Business & Economic
Development, as well as “Outward Bound:
Strategic Financial and Tax Considerations
for International Export Expansion,” led by
Brian Meritt, Partner of McGladrey LLP.
The event was an “excellent network-
ing opportunity for companies who aren’t
usually able to do that and trade informa-
tion,” said Capt. Dennis “Doc” Noah of the
DEC. He added that a definite highlight of
the event was “the ability (for companies)
to meet different service providers all in
one place.”
Along with the DEC and MPA, other
sponsors included the State of Maryland
Department of Business & Economic
Development, World Trade Center Institute,
UPS, McCormick, McGladrey LLP, Ports
America Chesapeake, TeleCommunication
Systems, U.S. Commercial Service, Wells
Fargo, Whiteford Taylor & Preston, BB&T,
U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National
Foreign Trade Council and CityBizList.
Among the featured speakers for the
evening was Port consultant and former
U.S. Rep. Helen Delich Bentley.
Maryland/D.C. District Export Council
Chairman Carl Livesay at the trade event.
