plans for his clients, which include man- aging trees, like loblolly pine, from cradle to grave — meaning from the day they are planted in the ground until they get cut. He treats the trees with herbicides and conducts strategic commercial thinning
on his clients’ land. Since Tulloss is a sole proprietor, he utilizes contracts for some of the work within his clients’ forest man- agement plans, which can include lining up ditching contracts, getting roads built, laying pipe under roads, etc. Tulloss also signs his clients up for the American Tree Farm Program, which focuses on forest stewardship. He describes himself as a “one-stop-shop” forestry representative.
At the end of the day, his goal is to ensure landowners are maximizing their land for future use and keeping it healthy.
A Rewarding Career With a
Passionate Foundation
When we asked Tulloss what his favorite part of the job is, he said, “I love the reforestation part. From seeing a tract being cut, to site preparation, to planting
new trees — I love it all! I like to test out different genetics on different tree sites. I’m a huge advocate for advanced genetics in loblolly pines. Putting the final stamp of approval on a new stand of trees is very rewarding for me.”
Of course, there wouldn’t be a reward- ing career without passion behind it.
“I saw [that passion] in Bob Mazur and it was contagious. I owe it all to him for instilling a passion in me for this business, and for everything he did taking a rookie out of NC State under his wing. Without him, I would never be where I am today,” said Tulloss.
“I get to work in the prettiest state there is,” he continued. “I enjoy helping people and making the best recommendations for them. I enjoy keeping people employed and educating my clients about what we’re doing and why.”
Tulloss shared that it’s a passion of his to take challenges head-on and to make dreams come true for his clients. It might take one to five years to see the changes take place in a forest management plan, but it is well worth the wait.
Will’s Forestry Career Advice
“Talk to as many people as possible before you decide on a career path,” advised Tulloss. “Find your niche and lean into it. Learn the ins and outs of the business. Shadow experts at different-sized companies — do as much as you can before you graduate.”
However, his most important piece of advice is one we can all get behind.
“Find something you like to do — something you can still enjoy in 100-degree heat,” said Tulloss. “It takes a passionate person to do what we do. I get a lot of joy out of helping and educating landowners and the public. If this is your passion, forestry is an extremely satisfying industry to be in.”
