FORESTER
Careers in Forestry:
CONSULTING
By: Jeanne Harmor, Director of Communications, NCFA
There are many career pathways that individuals can pursue in forestry,
and they’re all vital to our industry’s success. In each issue of TreeLine, we will spotlight a different career and the role that career plays in the forestry industry.
For this issue, we sat down with Consulting Forester Will Tulloss, president of Mazur & Tulloss Associates LLC.
Early Beginnings
Will Tulloss was born and raised in Wilson, NC. Forestry did not run in his family, but he grew up surrounded by many people who worked in forestry, from timber buyers to logging families. His grandfather sold logging equipment in the 1970s and then switched to selling construction equipment in the 1980s. Tulloss always thought he’d be an engineer, or perhaps carry on the family business started by his grandfather.
“My family advised against me taking over their business, so I had to change course,” said Tulloss. “I just knew I wanted to do something outside, but I wasn’t sure what.”
Before he graduated high school, Tulloss attended an open house at North Carolina State University’s (NC State) College of Natural Resources. He immediately fell in love with the school and the forest management program. He would eventually be accepted into the program and graduate in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in forest management and a minor in business.
Continuing a Legacy
During college, Tulloss met a consulting forester named Bob Mazur. They immediately hit it off, and Tulloss worked for Mazur part-time while studying at NC State, getting firsthand experience in the world of consulting forestry and learning as much as he could along the way. As he neared the end of his senior year, he interviewed for a couple of procurement forester positions in other
