Rare and special books make ideal personalized holiday gifts.
As you wrack your brain for an original holiday gift idea for someone special, that need may be covered with a rare antiquarian book in the recipient’s field of interest. The last time I checked Baldwin’s Book Barn in West Chester, a well-preserved leather-bound $125 set of the novels of Robert Louis Stevenson was available for the writer or student of literature in the family. For anyone studying to be a sommelier,
the 1978 edition of George Saintsbury’s Notes on a Cellar-Book captures the romance of making wine. It’s likely still available at AbeBooks.com for $77.
An archeology enthusiast should appreciate a 1897 edition of Charles Darwin’s Journal of Researches. RareBookCellar.com has one with a marbled cover and in great condition for $475. And for the mother-in-law with a
green thumb and a keen eye for inauthentic
sons-in-law, wrap up Beverly Nichols’ classic Down the Garden Path. First published in 1932, a 1933 reprint in very good condition lists for $134 on Biblio.com.
