LEAD THE WAY
TO THE FUTURE OF
CONSTRUCTION, CIVIL
PLANNING
Chester County is a growing, thriving community
adjacent to a major urban area, which creates a
diverse set of needs and challenges from a planning
perspective.
Large volumes of traffic need to be accommodated, civil
infrastructure needs to evolve along with the county’s
population, and major sites like educational institutions and
public gardens and parks need to evolve to welcome ever-
growing numbers of students, employees and visitors.
In the pages that follow, meet some of the local companies that
work with municipalities, educational institutions and private
developers to make it all happen.

BANCROFT CONSTRUCTION:
A Partner for the Community
The story of Bancroft Construction began in 1975, when it was
founded as Stephen M. Mockbee Builders. Now, the company
can look back on nearly 50 years of continuous growth. During
that time, Bancroft has had a hand in many outstanding
projects — including quite a few in Chester County.
One of Bancroft’s
biggest clients
is Longwood
Gardens. “We’ve
been Longwood
Gardens’ exclusive

manager for almost 15 years now,” said Bancroft CFO Casey
McCabe. “We started with a small roof replacement and now we
have a team of almost 30 people who are helping manage the
Longwood Reimagined project. I think that’s a testament to us
being a good partner for Longwood Gardens in the long term.”
Being a good partner is one of Bancroft’s core pillars, along
with being approachable and solving problems that may keep a
client’s ideal vision from becoming reality.
Bancroft doesn’t specialize in any particular kind of project, but
the company does have a significant portfolio in science and
technology. Another sector where Bancroft has a strong legacy
is education.
“We’ve done work for West Chester University,” McCabe said.
“We built the President’s Walk and the fountain when they redid
that whole corner of the campus. It’s one of the first things
parents see when they drop off their kids.”
Bancroft has also partnered with Lincoln University, Cheyney
University and the University of Pennsylvania. In the K-12 space,
one Bancroft client is the Kennett Consolidated School District.
“We renovated the steps at Kennett High School where seniors
stand when they graduate. It’s amazing to know that my kids
will stand on those steps one day, and Bancroft had a part in
that,” McCabe said.
Pride in Bancroft’s work is just one part of a company culture
that centers the well-being and achievements of Bancroft’s
140 employees. “Our culture is very family-feeling,” McCabe
said. “Our President, Greg Sawka, goes out to all our job sites
regularly to meet with employees and make sure he has his
finger on the pulse of how people are doing.”
This, along with an emphasis on continuous improvement and
internal leadership development, has translated into excellent
retention rates, McCabe said, noting that he himself joined
Bancroft nearly 20 years ago.
Ultimately, he said, “we want to make a meaningful impact and
partner with clients to make their vision a reality. That’s what
we do, and we love what we do.”
