HISTORIC SUGARTOWN:
A Monument to Ordinary People
Just south of Malvern lies Historic Sugartown, an authentically
preserved 19th-century village with historic homes and buildings,
such as a general store and a school room exhibit.
“It’s a slice-of-life place where we talk about ordinary people from
the 1800s,” said Program Director VJ Kopacki. She noted that the
village was vital as “a depot for trade and commerce between
Philadelphia and other cities. This was a working town.”
Historic Sugartown is open for guided tours on Saturdays and
Sundays, May through November. It also hosts
regular events such as summer beer gardens,
lantern tours, and a winter craft fair that
showcases local vendors.
However, Historic Sugartown’s most popular
offerings are its bookbindery workshops.
“People from up and down the East Coast
come here to learn these historical crafts.
Preserving these practices for the future is
one of our goals.” Kopacki said. At the time of
writing, the bookbindery classes were sold
out several months in advance, so anyone
hoping to attend should plan ahead. Listings

Kopacki also noted that Historic Sugartown is always interested in
partnering with local businesses and nonprofits. “I’m invested in
collaborating on programs and events, both onsite at Sugartown
and offsite as well. Historic Sugartown was a vibrant community
and we continue to be a community-minded organization.” she
said. Local businesses looking to support Sugartown or sponsor
programs and events are welcome to contact Kopacki at vkopacki@
