CHESTER COUNTY CHAMBER
 HOME OF THE SPARROW
Exton-based Home of the Sparrow is dedicated to ensuring that no woman or child ever experiences homelessness. The nonprofit works with clients to provide support services and tailor solutions that address their unique situation.
“Through our six programs, we do our best to make sure a single woman or a mom and kids have a roof over their heads and the supports they need to put them on a path towards housing and financial stability,” said CEO Michelle E. Venema. “Our service area is only Chester County, so all of our attention and resources are utilized here.”
The six programs comprise supportive housing, pre-senior bridge housing, outreach to Home of the Sparrow graduates, eviction prevention, a re-entry assessment program for the recently incarcerated, and shared housing. In fiscal year 2020 alone, Home of the Sparrow supported 819 women and children, answered 1,034 calls for help and saved 82 families from eviction. The nonprofit
also maintains the #GivingGarage, where community members can donate everyday household products for women in need.
During the pandemic, there was a greater need for Home of the Sparrow’s services than ever. “We handled all the greater needs
of our clients and graduates and did a lot of outreach and case management,” Venema said. “Since we are a small but mighty staff, we were able to pivot as needed and because of our wonderful donors, we had the ability to support all of the increased needs.”

New support services included volunteer-based tutoring for children who were learning remotely, and collaboration with mental health professionals who helped Home of the Sparrow’s clients cope with pandemic stress.
How does Venema define Home of the Sparrow’s success? “I consider every day a success when we have helped someone in crisis in whatever way was necessary. Sometimes that is through a conversation, sometimes through monetary support, sometimes with gift cards for food or fuel. We do what we can and try to find creative ways to meet and solve complicated problems.”
