Urban Hub
Considered the hear t of Westchester, White Plains has always been a hotspot for live, work, and play. Never more so than now, when it seems like new restaurants, shops, residential complexes, and entertainment destinations are sprouting up at every turn.
As the county seat for government and home to several large corporate HQs (Heineken, Danone, and others), it’s no surprise that downtown is bustling. Fashionistas get their fix at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Tiffany, Gucci and other high-ends brands or thriving small boutiques like Lola New York. Foodies enjoy everything from Kanopi Restaurant at the top of the Opus hotel to Italian favorite Mulino’s to buzzy places like Red Horse from celebrity chef David Burke, Lily’s, and the Blind Pig. Cultural favorites White Plains Performing Arts Center and
Ar tsWestchester bring ar tistic flair to the downtown.
The housing trend in White Plains continues to be vertical: luxury apartment towers have been on the rise throughout the city for the last several years, including two high- profile projects, 70 Westchester Ave
and 51 South Broadway, that together will add another 300-plus apar tment units to the city’s ever-growing tally. Other new residences are The Mitchell, a hip luxury building in the heart of downtown; 1 Lyon, a luxury apartment tower that will have an emphasis on ar twork, as well as luxury lof t project
1 Martine Avenue at City Square, and Norden Lof ts, an adaptive reuse site with tons of amenities. A big project from development firm Greystar is
for thcoming: the 25-story, 50-unit project with impressive outdoor amenities including a full length-zero edge pool, is slated for completion in Spring 2024.
Yonkers:
Waterfront Wonder
New York State’s third-largest city, Yonkers offers urban living along
the Hudson River, where the Yonkers Waterfront District is flourishing. Many high-rises have sprung up along the river, and there are more to come. Recent entries include 440 rental
apar tments at 57 Alexander Street; Hudson Piers, a $585 million mixed- use development that will include market-rate housing, affordable housing, and retail space; and the $11.5 million, four-story 70 Pier Street
development that is set to revitalize Abe Cohen Plaza. Recently opened is The Marquee apartments, a 10-story building with 160 units, a gym, game room, and lounge, located on Bronx River Road and Hudson Park, which boasts views of New Jersey’s Palisades and the Hudson River.
Yonkers holds plenty of foodie
lures, with restaurants like X20 Xaviars on the Hudson and Zuppa Italian Restaurant, as well as the lively Yonkers Brewery and the new Simple Motive Brewing Company. The city also has more than 70 parks and historic sites including Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, Tibbets Brook Park, and Philipse Manor Hall State Historic
Site. There’s lots of cultural activities, too, ranging from the Hudson River Museum and Planetarium to events like Yonkers Arts Weekend and Riverfest to the Yonkers Philharmonic and Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway.
Mount Vernon:
The Next Hotspot
A hub of transit-oriented development in the county, Mount Vernon offers
its 70,000 residents a variety of neighborhoods, from vibrantly urban areas to traditional suburban enclaves. Just a quick commute to Manhattan via Metro-Nor th, the city is well positioned to become the next hotspot for New York City residents looking for more affordable housing deals.
Already getting kudos is the recently completed 42 Broad project, one of the world’s largest passive-house multifamily rental properties, offering 249 market-rate apartments, more than 20,000 square feet of amenities,
a parking garage, and high-efficiency mechanicals that significantly limit the structure’s energy use and carbon emissions. Also hot, 22 South West
in the Fleetwood neighborhood is a modern, 17-story building boasting a rooftop clubhouse with amazing views of the Manhattan skyline and Hudson River.
Mount Vernon also holds appeal
