  Major roads that connect you Within less than two hours’ drive, you
quickly and conveniently to
all points on the compass, international airports, local and inter-city
bus lines, multiple rail systems and even a cruising terminal — those are just a few of the many options that make travel fast and convenient in Baltimore County.
By Car
Major highways and interstates, including the heavily traveled I-95 and I-70, run through Baltimore County, carrying commuters and travelers up and down the East Coast and
to points west as well. I-83 cuts through the center of the county, north into Pennsylvania and south to Baltimore City.
The Baltimore Beltway, I-695, loops
around the city and county, connecting
to these interstates and many other major thoroughfares. Among them are I-795 and MD-43 (White Marsh Boulevard), which provide commuter access to some of the county’s major growth areas: Owings Mills in the northwest and White Marsh in the northeast.
In all, nearly 3,000 miles of state and county roads run across nearly 700 square miles. In the northern part of the county, which is less densely populated, the roads are two lanes or narrower, with many turns and scenic vistas.
By Plane
The closest airport is Baltimore- Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport, in neighboring Anne Arundel County. BWI is accessible by interstate, Amtrak, MARC commuter trains and Light Rail.
 can also reach Philadelphia International Airport, Washington-Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport.
By Train and Bus
The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) operates much of the public transportation in and through the county. Known as CityLink and LocalLink, the metro bus system has hundreds of miles of bus routes running through the city, Baltimore County and other nearby counties. The MTA website details routes and includes a ride planner.
The Baltimore Light Rail line starts at Hunt Valley Towne Centre and continues south for 30 miles and 32 stops to BWI. The Baltimore Metro subway follows a 15.5-mile, 14-station route from Metro Center at Owings Mills to Johns Hopkins Hospital in East Baltimore.
If you’re getting away and driving
isn’t the way you like to go, public transportation is plentiful. MegaBus operates express buses to New York City from the parking lot of White Marsh Mall.
The MARC train’s Penn Line offers commuter service from Perryville to Washington, DC via Baltimore City. In Baltimore County, it stops in Halethorpe and at Martin State Airport (a state- owned general aviation facility) in Middle River.
Amtrak has a full schedule of trains that stop at Baltimore’s Penn Station and BWI Airport, most traveling to destinations along the East Coast.
By Ship
The Cruise Maryland Terminal is just off I-95 at the Port of Baltimore. From here, Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruises offer year-round departures to the Caribbean and Canada/New England.
Specialty Transportation
MTA MobilityLink provides transportation for persons with disabilities. Certification of disability and registration are required. For more information and to complete an application, visit mta.maryland.gov.
Another service is CountyRide, a public- private partnership that provides specialized transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores and other errands for county residents over 60 years old, persons with disabilities between ages 18 and 59, and eligible residents of designated rural districts. The service operates only in Baltimore County and
to and from hospitals in the city that are partnership members.
Towson is the Baltimore County seat and is in close proximity to major metropolitan areas:
