E-Cigarette, or Vaping, Product Use-Associated Lung Injury (EVALI): A Case Report
Mitchell Barnes, DO; Kris Conde, MD
E-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) is an acute inhalation lung injury with no definitive etiology to date. Theories include lipoid-induced and Vitamin E acetate-induced lung injuries. There are common radiographic findings, in the appropriate clinical setting, suggesting EVALI, such as basilar-predominant consolidations and ground glass opacities, commonly with subpleural sparing. EVALI is commonly treated as a diagnosis of exclusion. There are no absolute clinical, radiologic, or histologic findings to establish criteria for a diagnosis. Until more data becomes available, the entire clinical picture must be taken into context for an accurate diagnosis.
