Farmers’ markets are as common here as apple trees, offering everything from fresh produce to homemade salsa. Destination eating is what the Hudson Valley is all about, and “Good food grown well” is the motto of Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, a farm devoted to best practices and a fascinating place to visit. The rest of the region has fields of wonderful vegetables, orchards of fabulous fruits, and many are pick-it-yourself farms. Visit any one of these places and talk to the farmers, and you’ll begin to understand more of the culture of our region.
         Historically
REVOLUTIONARY!
About 150 years after Henry Hudson’s visit, the colonists declared their independence from England, and the peaceful countryside gave way to Revolutionary War battles. Relive some of that action at numerous forts and battlefields, such as Stony Point, just south of the United States Military Academy at West Point. George Washington commanded his troops from here, and his headquarters and the colonial homes in the area are fascinating to visit. When not ensconced at the White House, a more recent president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, spent much of his life at the family’s ancestral home in Hyde Park. His presidential library is on the grounds, providing a glimpse into his terms in office and the history of the time.
