HUDSON VALLEY GUIDE
PUTNAM COUNTY
Brimming with historic sites, charming downtowns, lakes, and swaths of farmland, Putnam County strikes the ideal balance between culture, commerce, and outdoor pursuits. In addition to natural treasures, including hiking and biking trails and ski areas, the county goes big on culture. You’ll find a nationally-acclaimed Shakespeare company, a world-class museum dedicated to contemporary Italian art, and even the largest indoor Buddha statue in the Western Hemisphere here.
Cold Spring, popular among day-trip- ping New Yorkers, is home to antiques stores, specialty shops, cafés with a farm- to-table spin, and Hudson House River Inn. Hudson Hil’s is arguably the most popular dining destination in town, with a break- fast menu that includes chocolate babka French toast, as well as a nicely stocked market offering local products. While in town, we recommend setting aside time to bask in the bucolic 15 acres of Stonecrop Gardens, offering a diverse collection of gardens and a stunning conservatory.
O utdoor pursuits include the Appalachian Trail, the Great Swamp, the Putnam County Trailway and Clarence Fahnestock State Park. At the West Point Foundry Preserve in Cold Spring, you can watch wildlife, picnic, and take an audio- visual tour of ruins and replicas of 19th- century ironworks. Head to Thunder Ridge Ski Area in Patterson in the winter for their slopes and trails and check out Liberty
Paintball at the ski area any time of year.
Carmel, the county seat, is also home to the Chuang Yen Monastery, a Buddhist monastery set on 225 serene acres. Nearby, Brewster offers agri-tour- ist attractions such as Tilly Foster Farm and Green Chimneys Farm & Wildlife Center. In the summer, Mahopac deliv- ers pristine greens at the Mahopac Golf and Beach Club. And a riverview picnic on the lawn of Boscobel House and Gardens in Garrison, followed by a performance at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, is a must-do in summer.
        Did you know?
The unassuming town of Carmel has produced more than its share of professional athletes and sports figures. Just a sampling includes Lou Albano (“Captain Lou”), wrestler/manager; Ryan Kelly, basketball player; Tom Newton, running back for the New York Jets; and Sabrina Vega, a member of the USA World Championship Gymnastics team in 2011.
