HUDSON VALLEY HOT SPOTS
  Rockland County
For a small town, Nyack is surprisingly big on restaurant cred. Esquire named casual, family-run Filippino restaurant Karenderya to its Best New Restaurants in America list in 2018 for its perfect adobo pork belly and curated Hudson Valley craft beer list. Also in town are DPNB Pasta & Provisions, where Chef Tony Scotto crafts excellent, seasonal fresh pastas, and BV’s Grill at the Time Hotel, serving lushly marbled cuts of USDA Prime beef. For brunch, don’t miss Roost in Sparkill, which also offers a dinner menu of Mediterranean-meets- Latin dishes.
Orange County
CIA-educated chef-owner Michael Kelly pioneered a restaurant revival in Newburgh with the opening of Liberty Street Bistro in 2016. Today, the res- taurant is still a gastronomic destination for its seasonally driven, New American and French-inflected menu, highlight-
ing the Hudson Valley (and for its craft cocktails). Also in Newburgh is new Hudson Taco, which gets creative with options like Chinese-sparerib-inspired pork belly and chilled tuna tataki tacos, and Billy Joe’s Ribworks, where you’ll want to nab a table on the waterfront deck for expansive Hudson River views and stick-to-your-ribs barbecue. Or dine on a dime at Betty’s Country Kitchen in Washingtonville, a local favorite for homey breakfasts and diner-style sandwiches.
Putnam County
From the New York strip steak to the pork ragù, carnivores delight in the lo- cally raised, natural, and/or non-GMO meat-focused menu at Clocktower Grill in Brewster. Oenophiles head to Mahopac instead, for dinner at Dish Bistro & Wine Bar, where the assortment of international small plates (Calabrian ahi tuna poke, nat- urally fermented pizzas, vegan wild mush- room bowls), pairs with the affordable wine list. Also in Mahopac is Ramiro’s 954,
spanning the cuisines of Latin America and Mexico, with dishes such as stuffed sweet plantains, seared shrimp tacos, and crab cakes with mango-mustard sauce.
Dutchess County
Located in Hyde Park, the Culinary Institute of America boasts six stu- dent-run eateries on its 170-acre cam- pus, including formal, French The Bocus Restaurant; regional Italian Ristorante Caterina de’ Medici; and fine-dining American Bounty Restaurant. More ca- sual options include artful patisserie at Apple Pie Bakery Café, wood-fired pizza at Al Forno Trattoria, and craft beers, brewed on-site at The Brewery at the CIA. In nearby Poughkeepsie, Mill House Brewing Company goes beyond the stan- dard brewpub fare withwith a variety of sophisticated plates. New as of 2017 is the exceedingly stylish Heritage Food + Drink, serving elevated comfort food like pimen- to hot chicken, crispy pork panzanella, and buttermilk-fried enoki mushrooms.
