Major Projects Underway Create a Positive Industry Outlook
Baltimore County accounts for more than 14% of all construction jobs in Maryland, according to the county’s
Department of Economic and Workforce Development (DEWD).
Altogether, more than 24,000 people work in construction in Baltimore County, for more than 2,000 construction employers.
Those numbers are unlikely to slow down any time soon. According to the latest quarterly report by commercial real estate firm MacKenzie, nonresidential construction spending in the Greater Baltimore area rose 17% between the second quarter of 2022 and the second quarter of 2023.
Large-scale construction projects are underway all over the county, including Towson Row, a 1.2 million-square-foot mixed-use development that is projected to create more than 3,000 construction jobs, generate nearly $185 million in labor income and create nearly $500 million in business sales.
In the east of the county, Tradepoint Atlantic, a redevelopment of the Sparrows Point industrial peninsula, has been creating jobs on an even larger scale. When the project was announced in 2016, developers projected 21,000 jobs would be created during the construction phase, set to last until 2025. Large-scale warehouses and terminal facilities have already risen at Sparrows Point in recent years. One of the most significant developments currently underway is Sparrows Point Steel, a manufacturing facility that will make components for wind turbines, including foundations, turbine towers and transition pieces.
Another project in Baltimore County’s east is Greenleigh. Located in Middle River, Greenleigh is a 1,000-acre mixed-use community just a few minutes from I-95. Two luxury apartment communities and
a Springhill Suites by Marriott hotel are among the complex’s attractions.
