Government Contractors, Startups Sow Seeds for a Growing Industry
The IT industry is the fastest-growing of Baltimore County’s priority industries, with a 2019 estimate by the Baltimore County Department of Economic and Workforce Development forecasting 19% growth through 2024.
The 71-acre bwtech@UMBC incubator houses more than 100 startups in the fields of cyber, biotech and govtech. Tenants include innovative companies like Zavda Technologies, which contracts with the Department of Defense on IT solutions, and 4S-Silversword, which supports critical programs such as the Defense Health Agency’s animal-assisted therapy with its software solutions.
To the north, Hunt Valley is a nationally recognized hub for digital gaming and entertainment companies like Firaxis Games, BreakAway Games and ZeniMax Online Studios.
Many of Baltimore County’s IT jobs reside with defense companies and government contractors like Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics Information Technology. Companies in the government-contracting field benefit from the close proximity of federal agencies and installations such as the Social Security Administration, the NSA and Fort Meade.
