What do you expect from the perfect location for your business — a highly educated talent pool? Proximity to major markets? Ample real estate?
Baltimore County offers all of that and more. Of our 850,000 residents, 40.4% have a bachelor’s degree or higher, outstripping the national average by several percentage points. The metropolitan Baltimore area educates well over 100,000 students at 25 major colleges and universities like UMBC, Towson University and Johns Hopkins University. The result for employers? A deep bench of brilliant researchers, engineers and creative thinkers.
Our dynamic economy is home to more than 20,000
businesses that grow and add jobs annually. Major employers headquartered or located in the county include the Social Security Administration, BD Life Sciences (medical technology), KMI Technologies (engineering), US Lacrosse (the sport’s national governing body), Kelly Benefits (insurance/benefits) and spice giant McCormick & Company. Further economic opportunities will open up in coming years thanks to:
• The cannabis industry, which is set for explosive growth following the legalization of recreational marijuana as of July 1, 2023.
• Sports betting, which became legal in Maryland in November 2022.
As for location? Baltimore County is at the heart of the East Coast, with easy access to I-95 from almost anywhere. Major airports from Washington, DC to Baltimore and Philadelphia are less than a two-hour drive away, and an extensive freight rail network provides easy access to the Midwest and beyond. The Port of Baltimore is a major shipping hub that makes exporting and importing your components and products easy.
In addition, Eastern Baltimore County is home to Tradepoint Atlantic, a 3,300-acre global logistics center that features unmatched access to deep-water shipping berths, railway lines and national highway arteries. Major employers like Amazon, BMW, Home Depot and Under Armour have leased or built space
at Tradepoint, creating thousands of new jobs. Development of a massive manufacturing facility for wind turbine components is also underway at Tradepoint.
When it comes to real estate, Baltimore County and surrounding areas are in the middle of a construction boom. Notable emerging projects include a major overhaul of the Security Square Mall
into a mixed-use destination that could include workspaces, residential buildings, recreational facilities, restaurants and retail. More projects are sure to emerge in coming years thanks to infrastructure funding from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
In the county seat of Towson, more than $1 billion in recent private investment has created a boulevard of restaurants and entertainment options that attracts visitors from all over the region. One transformative project is Towson Row, a massive development featuring two luxury apartment buildings, two hotels, multiple retail options and a startup incubator affiliated with Towson University. Towson’s diverse business climate has attracted not just startups, but also major employers like Whiting- Turner Contracting and Stanley Black and Decker.
