 New Effort Underway to Update
Churchman’s Crossing Plan
The 1997 Churchman’s Crossing Land Use and Transportation Plan developed a vision for this economically important area, which includes major retail and employment centers like the Christiana Mall and hospital. In 1997, growth was expected around this area, and there was a need for coordination to plan effectively.
Since then, there have been many changes to residential and commercial areas in Churchman’s Crossing that have altered its landscape, including expansions at the Christiana Hospital, Delaware Park & Casino, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., and numerous changes at the Christiana Mall. This new growth area, despite the projects that have been completed. Even with the expansion of the pedestrian network, improvements to the bus transit system, and the addition of SEPTA train service, Churchman’s Crossing continues to be auto-centric. and evening peak travel periods. With so rise in auto crashes, and six intersections within the study area are now found in Delaware’s top 20 intersections with the most crashes.
The objective of this new planning effort is to develop a comprehensive update to the 1997 plan. The update will develop an updated set of goals and objectives, and a performance review of possible solutions developed by the 1997 plan. It will also determine if those solutions would still be effective today.
The plan will contain revised near and long-term (20 years) transportation and land use solutions and policies that match with the changing land use and transportation landscape of today.
