INTRODUCTION
home, Sunnyside, is part of the Historic Hud- son Valley’s collection of residences, available for tours and home to events like The Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze, which delights visitors each year with thousands of carved pumpkins.
In nearby counties, the history lessons con- tinue. George Washington really did sleep in Orange County, in Hasbrouck House, which was one of his headquarters during the Revo- lutionary War. Rockland boasts the oldest lighthouse on the Hudson River (Stony Point) and has the infamous distinction of being the location where traitor Benedict Arnold’s co- conspirator, British Major John Andre, was hanged. If you travel along the river in Put- nam County, you will see a castle high up on the mountain’s ridge. Known as Castle Rock, it was built by William Osborn, president of the Illinois Central Railroad, and was rumored to be the inspiration for L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz. Keep heading up the River to learn about President Franklin Delano Roos- evelt, with a visit to his home and library in Dutchess County’s Hyde Park.
CULTURE AND CREATIVITY
The entire Hudson Valley is filled with creative outlets for artists, musicians, and performers alike. Art museums include the esteemed Neuberger Museum and the Kato- nah Museum of Art. Live-performance ven- ues, meanwhile, draw talent from all over the country. In Westchester, you can catch shows at venues such as the historic Paramount Center, Tarrytown Music Hall, the Capitol Theatre, the White Plains Performing Arts Center, Yorktown Stage, the Emelin The-
atre and the Equity-showcase Westchester Broadway Theatre. The surrounding coun- ties include venues such as Orange County’s Eisenhower Hall, the second-largest the- ater in the US; the Rockland Center of the Arts; Putnam’s Brewster Theater Company and Boscobel’s Shakespeare Festival; and Dutchess’ Bardavon 1869 Opera House, the oldest operating theater in the state.
