HISTORIC HUDSON VALLEY
New York is steeped in history, and much of the Hudson Valley claims strong Native American roots. Just look at some of the local names: Armonk, a Siwanoy designation; Cro- ton is named after an Indian chief; and Ossin- ing, whose name means “a place of stones.”
Author Washington Irving was a West- chester resident in the village that is now named for him, Irvington. The area was the inspiration for the setting for one of his most legendary tales, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” which has made the Headless Horseman famous for generations. Irving’s
