 t he Hudson Valley is exceptionally gorgeous this time of year with its fabulously flashy
display of fall foliage. To enjoy the show, we highly recommend hitting the trails to hike, bike, or simply
stroll. Even better, combine your outing with a visit to one of our region’s excellent cideries. After all, the very best apples grow right here. “A combination of the right elevation and climate to grow apples specifically for cider makes New York an incredible place to be a cider drinker and gives cidermakers a diverse selection of fruit with differing levels of tannin,
acid, and sugar,” says Joe Gaynor, expert cidermaker at Angry Orchard in Walden. Our local hard cider happens to be in the midst of a remarkable renaissance. For a brief history of one of the oldest beverages on the planet and dozens of spots to sip it, see “Core Values” on page 26.
Another fabulous way to celebrate fall is to take full advantage of Hudson Valley Restaurant Week! This season we have over 100 participating restaurants from fine dining to casual eateries. We highly encourage you to make reservations for lunch and dinner at your favorite spots as well as try out a few places you’ve never been before. From October 30 to November 12, you’ll be treated to special menus and discounted prices—so not only will you save money, but you’ll be supporting the excellent regional eateries we all love and appreciate!
