After leasing Lazaretto Terminal in Canton for nearly a decade, Cap Rukert saves enough money
to purchase it from the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Rukert Terminals completes its first major development project at Lazaretto Terminal by constructing the “A” berth pier and three modern transit sheds.
Rukert improves Lazaretto further by adding the “B” berth pier and an adjacent warehouse. This large investment establishes the Lazaretto Terminal as one of the finest in the port.
After leasing it for almost 30 years, Rukert Terminals purchases the Pier 5 facility in Canton from the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Rukert Terminals is forced to vacate its Lazaretto Terminal for a period of
five years to accommodate construction of the Fort McHenry Tunnel. The company moves operations to Pier 5 and launches a multi-million-dollar program to improve and expand the Pier 5 facility.
