ach shiny new Isuzu truck that rolls off a ship in
Baltimore makes a stop at a vehicle processing facility
on the Dundalk Marine Terminal, where options are
installed at the dealers’ request.
Isuzu trucks have been processed at a Baltimore
terminal since 1985, and in April of this year, ITOCHU Automobile
America Inc. (IAAI) acquired the Isuzu Commercial Truck account,
which formerly had been handled by Promax Automotive.
What is now IAAI has used Wallenius Wilhelmsen Industrial
Baltimore (WWIB) since 2008 to install everything from air
deflectors, backup alarms and oil pan heaters to remote mirrors,
secondary fuel tanks and tracking systems.
Processing nearly 30 trucks a day requires intricate
coordination to
make sure that
everything gets
done quickly and
properly.
“With vehicle processing in general, coordinating all of the
pieces for a quality truck to arrive at the dealer has the potential
for various hiccups to occur,” said Sue Andrews, Baltimore Port
Operations Manager for IAAI. “We have to ensure the processor
has qualified employees for installing all of our accessories,
communicate vessel arrivals, facilitate custom clearances, make
sure all the parts arrive in time, be very mindful of quality issues
and coordinate with the carrier for final delivery to the end user.”
