Maryland Pilots Enjoy
Historic Milestone
T
he Association of Maryland
Pilots — the oldest such body in
the nation — hosted an afternoon
reception in June to celebrate the
group’s founding 160 years ago. The
event was held at the original location
of the Pilot office, the former Union
Hotel (now Duda’s Tavern), at the
corner of Bond and Thames streets in
Fells Point. Guests included federal,
state and local government officials,
partners in both the public and private
sectors of the Port, community leaders
and friends of the Association.
Association President Captain Eric
Nielsen stated that the event was “a
unique opportunity for us to appreciate
our ‘partners in the Port’ for their coop-
erative support over the last couple of
centuries and to pledge our commitment
to continue our joint efforts to maintain
the Port’s preeminent position among the
nation’s ports.”
The profession of piloting in
Maryland dates back to the 1600s
and was first regulated by the state
in 1787. But it was not until 1852 that
a change in the state law permitted
the state-licensed pilots to form an
Association, resulting in the first port-
wide Association of pilots in the United
States.
The Maryland
Association can
also claim the first
purpose-built steam
pilot boat in the
nation, the first
minority Pilot in the
United States,
one of the
first female
Pilots
in the
country,
and one of the first users of a portable
Differential Global Piloting System for
precision navigation in the hazardous
conditions encountered in the
Chesapeake Bay.
Captain Henry J. Vaughan was the
first President and was followed by 14
subsequent Presidents between 1852 and
2000,
including the current President,
Capt. Nielsen, shown with John and
Antoinette Flurry of Duda’s Tavern.
