A Popular Project
At Poplar Island
T
he National Aquarium, U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers, the Maryland
Environmental Service and Ports
America sponsored a day of planting
native marsh grasses on Poplar Island on
June 10.
Poplar Island had nearly disappeared
due to erosion before the Maryland
Port Administration (MPA) and Corps
of Engineers re-created the island’s
original footprint using dredged
material. The island quickly became
a magnet for birds and wildlife.
The native grasses add to the
site’s stability, reduce erosion and
provide habitat for wildlife, according
to Katrina Jones, MPA Outreach
Coordinator for Harbor Development.
The corps of volunteers planting
grasses included MPA Deputy Executive
Director M. Kathleen Broadwater,
along with 13 representatives from
the Port of Baltimore community.
