This summer, the NCFA education team has been busy preparing teachers for the launch of North Carolina’s first high school forestry course with a credential. AN53 Natural Resources II – Forestry is now being taught in high
school classrooms across our state! The team, with the help of several
members of the NCFA Education Committee and the forestry community, hosted three separate professional development workshops for educators planning to teach the course. The workshops were hosted at Haywood Community College and Montgomery Community College, with the final workshop taking place at the NC Association for
Career and Technical Education Summer Conference in Winston-Salem.
The workshops allowed educators an opportunity to become familiar with the new curriculum and to explore
the course’s resources. Each workshop exposed educators to different facets of forestry, including mill tours, timber cruising, dendrology activities, forest management planning, and a chance to connect with experts in the forestry and forest products industry.
A total of 26 teachers attended the workshops this summer, representing 22 high schools across 22 counties. Educators left the workshops feeling prepared and confident, taking with them the tools they need to be successful in teaching this new course to their students.
