Teachers also gained confidence in teaching forestry and shared what they plan to do in their classrooms:
“I will use PLT resources and adapt information from industry to get students excited and informed about forestry in the U.S.”
“I plan on making a new elective for my school based off of PLT.”
“[I plan to] use ... jobs
as references of things students can do. [I will] also focus on forestry when talking about sustainability.”
Teachers learn about the plywood
manufacturing process at Columbia Forest Products in Old Fort, NC during the 2022 Mountains SFTE.
When looking into forestry education in North Carolina, there is an obvious gap between the level of depth of forestry in the curriculum versus
other aspects of natural resources. It
is clear that without proper education
on sustainable forestry, many outside
the industry have very little knowledge of what sustainable forestry looks like
in practice. Programs like the SFTE and other educational outreach efforts — like the forestry course for North Carolina high school agricultural education, which will be released in the 2024-2025 school year (see p. 26 for more information on the course), and associated career fair events that the NCFA participates in — help to bridge that gap.
                      DRIVING INNOVATION.
