A New Way to Support Schools:
Forestry Care Packages
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Forestry and Environmental Camps were put on hold in 2021. However, that did not stop the NCFA from providing support to our students.
The NCFA’s former Director of Education, Amy Juliana, delivered a forestry-camp care package to middle school science teachers at Roland-Grise and Murray middle schools in Wilmington, NC. The package contained tree identification books, tree cookies, dichotomous keys, a soil pH kit, a Biltmore stick, forestry career information, Study Goods from the Woods bags, lesson plans, and industry information.
We look forward to seeing the students out in the woods next fall!
NCFA Introduces New ‘Discover Forestry Kits’
When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down our schools in March of 2020, the in-person Forestry and Environmental Camps were immediately canceled. This cancellation meant that 1,500 students from across the state lost the opportunity to gain experience from forestry and natural resource professionals and were unable to participate in forestry education activities. Now, 18 months
later, we are excited to pivot our in-person programming and offer a safe new alternative.
The Discover Forestry Kit is an interactive camp activity in a box! Kits will include a
Project Learning Tree lesson plan and a classroom set of materials. Kits are available to upper elementary and middle school students in urban areas and are free of charge to NCFA members and North Carolina teachers. This kit aligns with our original program goals and objectives for our camps.
“This is a fantastic opportunity
to provide valuable resources to our teachers, include forestry education in the classroom, and safely navigate COVID-19 restrictions,” said former NCFA Director of Education Amy Juliana. “I anticipate this resource being a great teaching tool
and predict we will be able to reach more students with our sustainability message.”
Two versions of the Discover Forestry Kits are available:
Soils: “Students explore differences in soil types and what those differences mean to people and to plants. They also investigate the role soil organisms play, both in building soil and in decomposition.” (Project Learning Tree)
• Kit includes containers for collecting soil, trowel, magnifying glasses, and a
lesson plan.
Parts of a Tree: “By modeling the parts of a tree and creating a ‘tree factory,’ students will learn about the structure of a tree.” (Project Learning Tree)
• Kit includes a “Parts of a Tree” handout, yarn, and a lesson plan.
To request a kit, please contact the NCFA at 919-834-3943.
