staff organizations. Since there were no nominations received from the medical were accepted at the Interim Council Meeting and the name of Selvam J. Mascarenhas, MD was put forth. There Dr. Mascarenhas accepted the nomination. The Council elected Dr. Mascarenhas as the AMA OMSS Alternate Delegate. This position carries a two-year term.
2018 NOMINATING COMMITTEE
The MSD Nominating Committee is comprised of seven members, six of which are selected from the Council members. The Nominating Committee is appointed annually by the MSD Executive Board
at its May meeting after nominations are accepted at the Interim Council Meeting held in April. The members serving on
the Nominating Committee have the responsibility throughout the year to have an interest in serving in the various positions that are expiring, who are then elected at the Annual Meeting held in November.
The following Council members
were nominated to serve on the 2018 Nominating Committee: Mark Borer, MD; Anna D’Amico, MD; Kelly Eschbach, MD; John Goodill, MD; Timothy Manzone, MD; and Robert Varipapa, MD. The MSD President- Elect, Andrew Dahlke, MD, will serve as the Chair of the Committee.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
A report was provided from Richard Henderson, MD, President, on his
activities since the beginning of his term. Aside from the President’s regular duties and meeting responsibilities, Dr. Henderson informed of his attendance at the AMA National Advocacy Conference in Washington, DC from February
12-14, 2018. There was excitement regarding the AMA’s effort to repeal
the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB), increased government funding for medical education, approval of CHIP reauthorization for another 10 years, and emergency medical funding for hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico. Dr. Henderson also attended the AMA Scope of Practice Summit held on March 20
in Chicago. Other medical societies discussed their struggles with proper doctorate-level nurses, which has led to truth-in-advertising campaigns in these states. He also mentioned the Medical Society’s discussions surrounding
TREASURER’S REPORT
The Treasurer’s Report on the current
provided by Randeep Kahlon, MD. It was noted that the annual audit was performed and a clean report was given. The Treasurer’s Report also included the status of membership, showing a decrease in paid members compared
to the same time in 2017. A full-time Membership Coordinator was hired
in February of this year, which will help with the workload, as well as bringing experience to the Society’s recruitment and retention plans. Several current initiatives were highlighted: MedNet’s partnership with HealthEC; the plan being implemented for the reduction in the number of Delaware
Medical Journal issues published (beginning with the May/June issue, the Journal will be published as a double-month issue, rather than a monthly publication); forward progress on the Society’s Multiple Employment Program; and future launch of the Annual Planned Giving Campaign.
ADVOCACY UPDATE
Andrew Dahlke, MD, Chair of the
MSD Government Affairs Committee, provided the Advocacy Report by giving an update on the status of legislation introduced in Dover, with mention
of HB 160, the End of Life Options
Act; recreational marijuana; efforts to combat opioid abuse and the Delaware Attorney General’s action to enter into
a lawsuit against opioid manufacturers; and the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) legislation, which proposes to use a workers’ comp fee schedule to determine payment for services
OTHER REPORTS
During the Open Discussion Forum, Mark Borer, MD provided an update to the Council members on his work at the national level regarding integrated care.
MSD ANNUAL MEETING DATE
The 2018 Medical Society of Delaware Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at
the Medical Society of Delaware Conference Center in Newark, Del. The Inaugural Gala will be held later in the evening at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Del.
